Predicting project time and costs using earned value management based on trapezoidal fuzzy numbers

Authors

Abstract:

Projects include activities that must be carried out at certain dates, with specified costs and determined qualities in order to satisfy the stakeholders. Project control is one of the most important and widely used issues in project-based organizations and it has attracted a lot of attention. So far, in the field of project control, there have been a lot of research that were done in different ways, which illustrates the application and importance of this issue. A significant point in all projects is the prediction of project time and costs. This will give project managers an opportunity to accurately evaluate the time and cost of completion of projects, and to minimize the delay in project completion and the budget deficits through more detailed project planning. This research aims to predict the project time and cost using the trapezoidal fuzzy number based on earned value management. This method can be used in the situations in which the conditions are uncertain and the percentage of real progress and program work are expressed in linguistics and qualitative manner. Finally, in this paper, the presented method has been applied in a real numerical example.

Estimation of Project Performance Using Earned Value Management and Fuzzy Regression

Earned Value Management is a critical project managementmethodology that evaluates project performance from cost andschedule viewpoints. The novel theoretical framework presented in thispaper estimates future performance of project regarding the past relativeinformation. It benefits from fuzzy regression (FR) models in estimationprocess in order to deal with the vagueness and impreciseness ofre...

Fuzzy regression analysis using trapezoidal fuzzy numbers

When it is question of prediction, no deterministic model can be totally efficient, especially when the output to be estimated is dependent imprecisely on many fluctuant variables measuring human behavior (cognitions, choices, consumption, etc.). Regressions based on fuzzy logic which combine statistics and expert’s attitudes can be used to improve the estimation of such outputs. Those regressi...

Ranking Exponential Trapezoidal Fuzzy Numbers by Median Value

In this paper, we want represented a method for ranking of two exponential trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. A median value is proposed for the ranking of exponential trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. For the validation the results of the proposed approach are compared with different existing approaches.

The Costs and Benefits of the Earned Value Management Process

The question of whether the benefits of the earned value management process exceed the costs has not been adequately reported in the literature. Several studies report the costs but ignore the benefits. Others focus on the benefits, but ignore the costs. For example, a widely circulated report by Coopers & Lybrand and TASC (1994) concludes that the DOD regulatory cost is significant, and the re...

Arithmetic Operations on Trapezoidal Fuzzy Numbers

In this paper, several new algebraic mathematics for positive fuzzy numbers of type (a,a,a,a) are devised and do not need the computation of α-cut of the fuzzy number. Direct mathematical expressions to evaluate exponential, square root, logarithms, inverse exponential etc. of positive fuzzy numbers of type (a,a,a,a) are obtained using the basic analytical principles of algebraic mathematics an...
